Our Story

Exploding Bacon Robotics Team 1902 has a legacy of dedication to STEM outreach in the state of Florida. In 2012 we introduced Exploding Science, a series of hands on experiments in physics, chemistry, simple machines, and alternative energy designed to be taught at after school programs around Central Florida.

After finding success with our Exploding Science modules we ambitiously began teaching summer camps in the summer of 2012. Using the basis of the Exploding Science experiments we created a week long camp to teach elementary and middle school aged kids the fundamentals of science as well as robotics.

These experiences have given us a solid foundation for basic scientific education. We took the concept of making science portable to reach more audiences and developed shoe box sized kits of science supplies and simple instructions for children around the world.

We have a passion for science and hope that by inspiring children in developing countries they will in turn help their communities grow and together we can rise up as a world that champions an appreciation of science and technology.

In fall of 2014, Exploding Bacon proudly launched Spark, and began development of the first Spark Kits sent to Haiti with one of our mentors to be tested in the field. With helpful feedback we refined the Kit and instructions and are now sending them to new locations and our instructions were translated into Spanish, by a fellow robotics team, Pantaras Team 2283, located in Mexico.

Many of our kits are delivered through mission trips. Several have gone to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church’s Haiti Mission trips and the church has awarded us not one, but two community grants to develop kits over the past two years. With this partnership we developed a connection with a very scientific minded, visiting Haitian student who translated our instruction book into Creole.

Through our partnership with other FIRST Teams, we are working to complete the instructions in more languages.

Spark is run by the mentors and students of Exploding Bacon who are passionate about reaching students around the world. We believe that all children should have access to a fundamental education and the opportunity to be inspired and empowered to change their world.

Spark depends on donations to reach as many as possible for children.
